Voluntourism and Cruising  March 2016
Nancy Schretter, Together for Good's Founder, is featured in a session entitled "Shorex and the Rise of Voluntourism" at Seatrade Global 2016, the cruise industry’s premier conference. This session covers how cruise lines and others are catering to travelers' interests in combining volunteer opportunities with leisure travel and ways ports can adapt and cater to this voluntourism trend.

Cabarete and Puerto Plata Areas:

The DREAM Project (Dominican Republic Education and Mentoring Project) is a US 501c3 nonprofit organization that promotes equal access to quality education for children born into poverty in rural areas and small communities of the Dominican Republic. The nonprofit's offices are located in Cabarete, on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic, about a 25-minute drive from the Puerto Plata Airport. The organization needs a wide variety of library, music and school supplies including coloring pencils, colored markers, scotch tape, masking tape, permanent markers, white board markers, glue sticks, erasers, zip lock bags, folders, Legos, Duplos, educational games in Spanish, dice, wooden puzzles, notebooks, balloons, pipe cleaners, stickers and much more. Supplies and in-kind donations can be dropped off at their offices at Plaza Novus Mare, Local 11, 2nd Floor, Carretera Cabarete - near the Ocean Dream Plaza. Beyond The Beach Children's Foundation is a nonprofit foundation that encourages travelers to give back on their vacations and help the children of the Dominican Republic. The organization works with local tour operators, community organizations and others to help children in a number of locations throughout the country. The organization can use donations of all sizes of new or gently used children's clothing and shoes, notebooks, pens, pencils, crayons, colored markers, pencil sharpeners, rulers, coloring books, glue sticks, calculators, and other types of basic school supplies. Mustard Seed Communities operates a home for more than 20 children with disabilities outside of Puerto Plata. The community is under expansion and will be able to care for a total of 40 children upon completion. The Mustard Seed Communities home needs toothpaste, deodorant, bath soap, hand sanitizer, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, disposable diapers (sizes 3,4,5,6 and medium-sized adult diapers), baby wipes, children's and adult vitamins, Tylenol and cold medications. Items for the children's home can be dropped off at The DREAM Project offices in Cabarete or at the offices of Isaira Tours in Puerto Plata. They sponsor a number of local schools, orphanages, and community support activities.
